Second Russia–Africa Summit to Coincide with the Anniversary of the Founding of the Organization of African Unity

25 May is Africa Day, a holiday symbolizing the unity and victory of the African peoples in their struggle for national independence and the building of a new life.

It was on this day in 1963, exactly 60 years ago, that the Organization of African Unity came into being, thus marking the beginning of the progressive movement of the continent towards political and economic integration. Its successor, the African Union, is continuing the work to develop collective approaches to maintaining peace and security, strengthening democracy, developing human potential, and ensuring socioeconomic growth.

Russia and Africa are united by traditional bonds of friendship, and it is emblematic that the Second Russia–Africa Summit is taking place during this anniversary year. The Summit, which will take place in St. Petersburg this coming July, will be the most important foreign policy event in Russia–Africa relations and give a new impetus to Russia’s wide-ranging relations with the countries of the continent in the long term.
